Digitize and share natural history collection information

As part of the INVEST Germany funding program, the Übersee-Museum Bremen has received funding to publish its natural history collections online for researchers and all interested parties. Planned are 3D digitization, high-resolution digitization in 2D processes and also the digitization of larger object collections, e.g. insect boxes.

Structuring collection metadata

One important task of our project has been to consider and implement requirements for a database-based inventory of all parts of the natural history collections. To achieve this goal, we have joined the Dina consortium. Various parties involved with natural history collections are jointly developing the Dina system to provide an openly usable, modular and innovative database platform.

In the meantime, we have also acquired and commissioned technology for imaging – i.e. the creation of digital images – as part of the project. Collection data will be shared with other biology researchers online in portals. The online presentation will also include links to information from our other collections: ethnographic, trade collections and historical picture archive. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2023.

The project is funded by the Freie Hansestadt Bremen (Free Hanseatic City of Bremen) and by the Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media).
